Orthodox Feasts and the Church Calendar
The Orthodox liturgical year commemorates events in the life of Jesus Christ, the Mother of God and the saints. Sveto Pravoslavie provides an English introduction to the calendar used in the Bulgarian Orthodox tradition, with links to the full Bulgarian-language entries.
Fixed and movable celebrations
Some feasts are observed on the same date each year; others are connected with the date of Pascha (Easter). The Ascension and Pentecost are examples of celebrations whose dates follow the Paschal cycle. The full calendar distinguishes fixed commemorations from movable feasts and shows their place within each year.
Major Orthodox celebrations
Explore the Nativity of Christ, Theophany, the Annunciation, the Transfiguration, the Dormition of the Mother of God and the feasts of the Resurrection. Details such as accompanying saints’ commemorations, readings and fasting notes are shown on the corresponding Bulgarian-language calendar pages.
