The life of Saint John of Rila

Saint John of Rila (c. 876–946) occupies a central place in Bulgarian Orthodox spirituality. According to the Bulgarian life, he was born in the village of Skrino. After the death of his parents, he shared his inheritance with people in need and entered a monastery.

He later sought greater solitude and lived as a hermit in difficult mountainous places, devoting himself to fasting, prayer and spiritual struggle. His reputation drew people who came for counsel and consolation, and a brotherhood formed around him in the Rila mountains.

The monastery associated with his name became an enduring centre of Orthodox prayer and pilgrimage. Saint John died on 18 August 946. He is commemorated on several dates in the Bulgarian calendar, including 19 October, 1 July and 18 August.

His life is remembered for humility, mercy, repentance and indifference to worldly honour. He is venerated as a heavenly protector of the Bulgarian people.
