Saint James, Brother of the Lord
The Holy Apostle James, Brother of the Lord.

The life of Saint James
Saint James, known in the Orthodox Church as the Brother of the Lord, had a leading role in the earliest Christian community in Jerusalem. The New Testament and Church tradition present him as a respected figure to whom the apostles and the faithful turned when serious questions arose.
After the Resurrection of Christ and the descent of the Holy Spirit, James continued to serve the Church in Jerusalem. The Acts of the Apostles records his part in the Council of Jerusalem, when the reception of Gentile converts into the Church was discussed.
Orthodox tradition associates his name with the ancient Divine Liturgy of Saint James. This liturgical tradition bears witness to the early worship of the Church and is still celebrated on certain occasions.
Church tradition holds that Saint James died as a martyr in Jerusalem. The Epistle of James is also associated with his name; it places strong emphasis on faith made visible through deeds. He is commemorated on 23 October.
