The life of Saint Demetrius

Saint Demetrius is closely associated with Thessaloniki and with the Christian heritage of the Balkans. He lived around the end of the third and beginning of the fourth century, when Christians faced persecution in the Roman Empire.

According to Church tradition, Demetrius held a position of public responsibility, but openly confessed Christ and encouraged other believers. He was arrested and imprisoned because of his faith.

He continued to pray and bear witness in prison and was eventually killed with spears. Christians buried him, and a church was later built over his tomb. The tradition of fragrant myrrh associated with his relics gave rise to the title “Myrrh-streamer”.

His veneration spread among Orthodox Christians, including in Bulgaria. His feast on 26 October is popularly known as Dimitrovden.

Venerable Dimitra of Kyiv (Dorostol)

Venerable Dimitra was born in Silistra (Dorostol) in 1810 and later lived within the Russian Empire. She became known for helping poor and suffering people, offering both practical assistance and spiritual support.

She received monastic tonsure discreetly and devoted her life to works of mercy. She died in 1878; the Bulgarian life records her local glorification in 2008.

The name “of Dorostol” honours her Bulgarian birthplace. The source also mentions 22 March in connection with her individual commemoration. She is included in the Bulgarian calendar entry for 26 October alongside Saint Demetrius.
