Saint Nicholas of Myra, the Wonderworker
Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia (Nikulden), on the tenth Sunday after the Sunday following the Exaltation of the Cross.

The life of Saint Nicholas
Saint Nicholas of Myra was born in Lycia to a Christian family. The Church’s account remembers his early devotion to prayer, self-restraint and charity. After the death of his parents, he used his inheritance to help others rather than for personal comfort.
A well-known traditional account describes how he secretly aided an impoverished family and helped protect its daughters from destitution. For Orthodox Christians this story has become an example of generosity offered without seeking praise.
Nicholas was chosen as bishop of Myra in Lycia. As a pastor he defended those in need, spoke on behalf of the unjustly accused and encouraged believers to follow the Gospel. Later Church tradition also associates him with the First Council of Nicaea.
After his death, veneration of Saint Nicholas spread widely. Many traditional accounts speak of his help to seafarers, travellers, the poor and people in danger. His feast on 6 December is especially beloved in Bulgaria.
Fasting and readings
The Bulgarian entry says that fish is traditionally permitted on this feast during the Nativity Fast.
